Child Hugging Dog

February Parent Activity

This month’s activity theme is Pets!

What pet or stuffed animal do you love the most? Send us a pic of your favorite "pet" to enter our giveaway! You could win a free bag of goodies for your child. Open to parents and guardians who reside in Madison County, NC. Giveaway items are appropriate for children birth through Pre-K.

Interacting with animals offers a unique opportunity for social connection and play without the fear of being wrong, judged, or worse—bullied.

Dogs, for example, are often seen as nonjudgmental and stable sources of unconditional acceptance. Their perceived forgiveness, authenticity, and lack of concern for mistakes can help make a child feel more at ease and calm.

A pet can play many roles in a child’s life – a playmate, a friend, a comforter… the list goes on! Pets help to strengthen family bonds, build self-esteem, and ease a sense of loneliness. And, in those times when a child feels sad, angry, or afraid, a pet can be the one they turn to for emotional support. This is because pets are excellent listeners; they never interrupt, they never judge, and they never share any secrets they’ve been told.

For some families, pets can help a child with neurodiversity – for example, stress, anxiety, depression, autism, and ADHD. One of the ways pets can help is with children who may struggle to talk to humans and prefer communicating with animals. A pet in the home gives them the opportunity to develop a close bond, knowing their special four-legged friend is there whenever they need them.

We invest in the First 2,000 Days of a child’s life — in children ages 0-5 and their families by partnering with local organizations to provide programs that:

  • improve the quality of early childhood education

  • increase access to affordable, high-quality early care

  • expand early literacy opportunities

  • provide family support

There are 2,000 days between birth and kindergarten. The majority of brain development happens during this time, forming the foundation for all future learning.
